The Gospel According to Luke and Acts are distinctive in their overall portrayal of women. Episodes involving women raise important questions concerning their origin and narrative function. The present study examines a well-known passage — the women who followed Jesus (Luke 8:1–3) — in order to address several key issues: who the women mentioned by Luke were, what roles they fulfilled, and, above all, why Luke, unlike the other evangelists, chose to mention them during Jesus’ public ministry. A close reading of the passage, attentive to its narrative details, yields interpretive insights that may be obscured by a strictly historical-critical approach.
