Abstrakt

This study examines the impact of menstrual poverty on self-perception among young Roma women from marginalized rural communities, with particular attention to their emotional well-being, social relationships, self-esteem, and educational participation. Based on focus group discussions and qualitative analysis, the article explores how limited access to menstrual hygiene products, inadequate sanitation, insufficient menstrual health education, and persistent stigma shape the lived experiences of adolescent Roma girls. The findings indicate that menstrual poverty has negative effects on self-esteem, body image, social interaction, and school attendance. Participants reported shame, embarrassment, anxiety, isolation, and reduced educational engagement. The study also highlights the long-term consequences of menstrual poverty, including decreased psychological well-being and restricted opportunities for social and educational development. The article situates menstrual poverty within broader socioeconomic inequalities and underlines the importance of social work, education, policy advocacy, and community-based support in addressing these challenges.
