Der obige Artikel schildert die Problematik der Irregularitäten und Hindernisse zum Empfang und zur Ausübung der Weihen. Dieses Problem wird durch den gültigen Codex des kanonischen Rechts in Kanonen 1040–1046 geregelt. Diese Grundsätze haben den Schutz und Beachtung der Heiligkeit und Würde des Weihesakraments zum Ziel. Die Kirche war seit den Zeiten der Apostel stets darum bemüht, dass sich die Priester durch solche Eigenschaften auszeichen, die ihrer großen Würde entsprechen würden. Auch heutzutagen ist die Sorge um eine entsprechende Geistesbildung der angehenden Priester eine der wichtigsten Fragen der Kirche.
