Journal History

"Analecta Cracoviensia" is an interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed yearbook of the John Paul II Pontifical University in Krakow, which has been published continuously since 1969.

This journal was created by the scientific community gathered around the then Faculty of Theology in Krakow. The Faculty was removed from the Jagiellonian University in 1954 and survived as an independent teaching and scientific unit thanks to the care of Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, then the Metropolitan of Cracow, and later Pope John Paul II.

In the first period of its history, i.e. until 1989 inclusive, the journal was subject to state censorship, which limited the freedom to publish the results of scientific research.

After the establishment of the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Cracow in 1981, the conclusion of an agreement with the Faculty of Theology of the Ruhr University in Bochum (Germany) in 1982 and the political changes in 1989. "Analecta Cracoviensia" could develop faster and became a magazine even more interdisciplinary and open to international cooperation.

An additional impulse for their development was the transformation of our university into the Pontifical University of  John Paul II in Kracow in 2009.

Thus, the history of "Analecta Cracoviensia" is closely connected with the history of the scientific community gathered around the university.
