Erich Kästner’s “Emil and the detectives” as a “spatial story”

This article examines the innovative narrative and aesthetic form of the classic children’s novel “Emil and the detectives” by German writer Erich Kästner (the strategy of playing with the reader, self-referentiality), discussed in the context of Roger Caillois’s anthropological theory. In the second part of the work, the author discusses the dimensions of space in Kästner’s novel, as well as the ways of depicting Berlin during the Weimar Republic using the tools of geopoetics (“spatial narrative,” map, route).
