“Fabian, the story of a moralist” of Erich Kästner and its reception in Poland

The article focuses on a brief characterization and history of the Polish reception of Erich Kästner’s first novel for adults “Fabian, the story of a moralist”. Two phases of the reception of Fabian in Poland the years 1933 and 1961 allow us to grasp the peculiarities of the development of German literature in Poland. The early 1960s indicate a more intense reception and positive reading. Its political and social themes are emphasized, the dialectically coexisting contradictions that characterize the novel, and finally the tragic fate of Fabian, a moralist and observer of the reality of Berlin around him.
