The article explores the relationship between Giovanni Orelli’s novel “Walaschek’s Dream” and Paul Klee’s painting “Alphabet I”, proposing the thesis that the text constitutes a particular form of hypotyposis of its visual prototype. After outlining the essential background regarding the novel’s creation, the article introduces the concept of hypotyposis as defined by Rozalia Słodczyk. It then analyzes how, based on excerpts from Paul Klee’s writings on art theory, Orelli employs various strategies to “make visible” the pictorial work.
