Strategies, adaptations, recontextualisations: the first Polish and English translation of Erich Kästner’s novel “Emil und die Detektive”

This paper discusses and compares the first Polish and English translations of Emil Kästner’s children’s novel “Emil und die Detektive” (1929). “Emil” was translated four times into Polish and English, with the first translations, by Polish Jew Dawid Lazer and American May Massee respectively, published already in 1930. The goal of the ensuing analysis is to investigate the dominant translation strategies employed in the earliest translations, with focus on their adaptive character and the degree of translator’s visibility. The analysis shows that the two translations follow radically different global translation strategies, cultural context adaptation (Lazer) and source text orientedness (Massee). In addition, the analysis reveals that the first Polish translation exists in two different editions, which exhibit considerable semantic and ideological differences.
