Abstract

In the second half of the 17th century Krakow entered a period of decline. Following the great epidemic of 1651-1652 and the havoc wrought by a tragic war with Sweden, the city struggled to rise from the ruins. One may find it hard to believe that the churches were promptly rebuilt, and the construction of new temples, which were frequently magnificent and artistically impressive, was quick. The period was marked with the worship of Catherina de' Pazzi (whose religious name is Mary Magdalene), a Florence Carmelite nun.
