Erich Kästner as a witness and victim of the Third Reich in the context of contemporary literary studies

The article presents Erich Kästner’s biography and work in light of his decision to remain in Nazi Germany. An important question is how his experiences of dictatorship, censorship and repression influenced his literary strategy and behaviour. The issue of the moral responsibility of writers during the regime is also significant here. The article also presents selected contemporary interpretations of his attitude during the Third Reich in the context of literary studies.
