Synod of Bishops – an institution promoting synodality in universal dimension

Taking up the subject and meaning of the Synod of Bishops in the present Church, also as an institution that promotes synodality in universal dimension, it is necessary to indicate that we deal with a church institution that will not only celebrate sixty years of its existence in 2025 but above all its real, very fruitful and dynamic functioning. In this context, it is worth noting that it is constantly being adapted to the dynamic post-conciliar ecclesiology and that in Pope Francis’ conviction, from the Second Vatican Council through the assemblies of the Synod of Bishops, we have experienced very intensely the necessity and beauty of “journeying together”. In these words of the reigning Bishop of Rome, we have a reference to what every synod should be, because the Latin word synodus means nothing else than “to walk together”. For this reason, the Holy Father has paid special attention to the Synod of Bishops from the beginning of his Petrine ministry, trusting that it will develop to better promote dialogue and cooperation among bishops and with the Bishop of Rome. To revive this work – he recalls – a strong conviction is necessary that all pastors are appointed to serve the holy people of God, to which they themselves belong by virtue of the sacrament of baptism. Moreover, the decisions taken by Francis are shown in relation to the magisterium of John Paul II and in accordance with the wish expressed many years ago by the Polish Pope, he wants to seek “such a form of exercising the primacy, which, without rejecting the essential elements of this mission, would be open to a new situation”. The Bishop of Rome sees the need to appreciate, but also to perfect the institution of the Synod of Bishops, which is a valuable heritage of the Council and an expression of collegiality, as emphasized by Paul VI and John Paul II. Synodality remains, therefore, “the path that the Lord God expects from the Church in the third millennium”.
