Abstract

Alcántara is a Spanish municipality in the Extremadura province known as the seat of the military Order of Alcántara founded in 12th c. Peter of Alcántara was born in 1499 to the family of Pedro Garavita, mayor of Alcántara, and Maria Vilela.  In his work to reform the order of Friars Minor, Peter supported the restoration movement, later known as the Alcántaran movement.
