Remarks on the former cenotaph of Władysław III of Varna in the Krakow Cathedral

This article examines the original monument to King Władysław III of Poland (Władysław of Varna) in Krakow Cathedral. Long before the erection of the monument designed by Antoni Madeyski in the early twentieth century, the cathedral housed a cenotaph dedicated to the king. It was most probably erected in the sixteenth century, although an even earlier, fifteenth-century date cannot be ruled out. Several written sources attest to its existence. The most important piece of evidence, however, is a ground plan of the cathedral prepared before the coronation of Frederick Augustus II as King of Poland in 1734. On this plan, the monument of the tragically deceased monarch is clearly marked by a small rectangle and briefly described. It was probably the only monument of its kind in the Kingdom of Poland, commemorating a ruler whose body was never recovered. The monument has not previously been the subject of scholarly inquiry.
