Good and ultimate meaning

This paper undertakes a reflection on the relationship between the question of the meaningfulness of being as such and human existence, and the category of the good—both in its ethical and ontological (metaphysical) dimensions. The primary framework of analysis is Christian (Catholic) ontotheology. Specific points of reference include the opposition between good and evil, as well as the question of the relationship between the categories of good and love, including a critique of Nicolai Hartmann’s concept of morality as “love for the most distant.” The unifying motif of this investigation is the thesis of the autotelicity and eternality of the good as the highest value. The ontic foundation of this claim is conceived as the absolute will of God, who eternally wills His own existence and regards it as good—a perspective assumed within theistic thought. This article represents a systematic, authorial reflection and, as such, does not constitute a historical-philosophical survey of the issue. With respect to the necessarily selective literature, the focus is primarily on contemporary sources, with relatively frequent references to the thought of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel.
