Between phenomenology and religious metaphysics: cognition and beauty in the thought of Simone Weil

Simone Weil, Alain, beauty, value, cognitionAbstract
The purpose of this article is to present the philosophical foundations of Simone Weil’s thought through an analysis of her texts dedicated to the concepts of detachment, value and ‘reading’. Although we find in these texts a sketch and a preliminary outline rather than a coherent philosophical theory, read together they form a certain whole and shed light on the problem of human cognition and the meaning of philosophy. A continuity is shown between philosophical reflection, inspired by Kant and Alain, and the religious dimension of Simone Weil’s thought, in which the beauty of the world, understood as the acceptance of the necessity that governs this world, plays an important role.
