„Ius post bellum”. On the contemporary understanding of peace as the expected end of war in the “bellum iustum” theory

The contemporary world is saturated with wars. New forms of conflict increasingly pose challenges to states and societies, confronting ideas about war with the fact of war, challenging established theories, laws, and customs. These challenges also concern the end of war. St. Augustine wrote that “the desired end of war is peace, because all seek peace, even when waging war”. This peace today turns out to be problematic and difficult to achieve, because it cannot be a state established as a “victor’s peace” or a “shameful peace” that could be the seed of another war. In response to this challenge, it is worth taking a look at the contemporary proposals of just peace, considering the minimalist and maximalist theory of “ius post bellum” (just peace).
