The concept of courage (the virtue of fortitude) in temptation — the voice of St. Joseph Sebastian Pelczar in the context of contemporary interpretative challenges of the problem

The paper aims to show the teaching of Joseph Sebastian Pelczar on the concept of courage (the virtue of fortitude) against temptation. In his work “Życie duchowne”, anchored in theological sources, temptation emerges as an opportunity for spiritual development on the basis of the cooperation of nature and grace. Thus, the key anthropological awareness of self-subjectivity and freedom is revealed. This message is then confronted with some contemporary secular interpretations, namely exclusive humanism and therapeutic religion. This study is based on the method of spiritual theology with references to moral philosophy (Taylor) and sociology (Rieff). As a conclusion, the developmental prospect, coming from understanding temptation as “a place of theophany”, could be apprehended, so as to face challenges of contemporary secularism.
