Were the High Places high? A study on the meaning of בָּמָה as a religious language of the Old Testament

The paper deals with the concept of ‘High Place’ (בָּמָה) as an important element of the Old Testament nomenclature. Starting from the fact that the meaning of this term has not yet been clearly established, the author tries to introduce the current state of knowledge and possible solutions. The paper presents a two-track analysis of the problem.
In the first section, it addresses the etymology of the term "High Place" (בָּמָה). While examining the Hebrew term, the author also refers to the literature of the ancient Middle East, showing a significant relationship between the term בָּמָה and related terms in the Ugarit, Akkad and Moab languages. Based on these relationships, the author tries to find an answer to the question of the identity of ‘High Places’. The first part shows that the etymological analysis gives grounds for considering the term ‘High Place’ as an ambiguous concept and proposes possible meanings and translations.
The second part of the paper focuses on the analysis of the biblical text. This is an attempt to characterize the term ‘High Place’ as a cultic term. By analyzing the biblical passages, the author searches for data on the construction, design, location and other characteristics of ‘High Places’ mentioned in the Old Testament. In light of the biblical data, the paper presents common hypotheses on this issue. Finally, a new, theological interpretative key is proposed, which the author tries to present as worthy of attention in the search for identity and characteristics of the term ‘High Place’.References
