Uman at the reception of a Polish nobleman. The everyday life of the city in the memories of Henrik Ulashyn

The article analyzes Uman’s everyday life at the end of the 19th century, described in the memoirs of the outstanding Polish Polonist Henryk Ulashyny (1874–1956). Henrik Ulashyn was a professor at three universities: Lviv (1920–1921), Poznan (1921–1939), and Lodz (1945–1956). In Uman, he spent his early youth while studying in the male pro-gymnasium, precisely in the period of its formation. The analysis of Henrik Ulashyn’s memoirs was supplemented with information from periodicals and archival documents, which made it possible to cover more comprehensively the issues of education and leisure of students of the Uman secondary school, the transformation of the city at the turn of the century, and the celebration of religious holidays in the city.
