The Church’s Magisterium on abuse: From diagnosis of the problem to a systemic response

The article analyzes the Catholic Church’s response to abuses of power, conscience, and sexuality during the pontificates of John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis. The aim of the study is to examine the evolution of preventive and legal measures undertaken by the aforementioned popes, as well as their impact on the Church’s credibility. The research focuses on how growing awareness of the scale of abuse and the implementation of formal procedures have influenced the Church’s effectiveness and accountability in addressing such crimes. The article highlights common elements in the actions of the popes and emphasizes the continuing need for reform in the areas of prevention and canonical responsibility.
