Abstract

The contribution of John H. Newman to theology has been newly appreciated through his being proclaimed a Doctor of the Church. Although the English theologian is associated, among other things, with the theory of the development of doctrine, it does not seem that his work “An essay on the development of Christian doctrine” is sufficiently well known. This article, through a careful analysis of Newman’s essay, presents this very theory of development in a synthetic way, highlighting its original and authenticating notes. These reveal its dependence on the historical event of Jesus Christ and, more broadly, on the history of the Church, while at the same time allowing for a reflection on Revelation that conveys it as a living and dynamic Tradition of faith. The more practical application of the characteristics of authentic development remains a broad and still open field of research.
