This article examines the pericope Matthew 5:13–16. It explores the significance of salt and light in the ancient biblical world, along with their rich symbolism in both cultic practice and social life. The main focus is on understanding the image of salt and light by the direct listeners of Jesus’ teaching, as well as the later development of the significance of these symbols in the life of the Church community.
