The saving relationship between God and Israel is described in the Bible as a ‘covenant’, most often using two terms, the Hebrew ‘berit’ and the Greek ‘diathéke.’ An analysis of the etymology of both terms allows distinguishing between two models of the covenant — ‘berit’ indicates a covenant based on conditions that must be fulfilled by the human party while ‘diathéke’ accentuates its gratuitousness and immutability by placing emphasis on the decree of one of the parties to the covenant. Thus, what is the model of the biblical covenant? Is it a ‘covenant of conditions’ or a ‘covenant of promise’? An analysis of the concept of the covenant in various biblical traditions proves that the biblical covenant is a genuine, original idea. As a matter of fact, it combines both models as it is always initiated by God who commits himself to be with his people, while the Law that the people are to keep is only a means of remaining in this covenant, not a condition for its existence. The commandments are therefore secondary to the act of grace.
