Meaning of the adverb σήμερον (Luke 2:11) in Luke’s message about Christmas

The article examines the theological and literary implications of the word „today” in the context of the narrative about the birth of Jesus contained in the Gospel according to Saint Luke. The analysis is based on three main pillars: historical-literary issues, tradition and redaction, and the kerygmatic aspect. The article points to the special structure of the diptych existing in the Infancy Narrative of Jesus. It analyzes the shepherds’ reactions to the angelic revelation, which reflects the pattern of faith and obedience to God’s plan of salvation. A crucial point of the study is the meaning of the adverb σήμερον, which not only defines the current day but also shows the fulfillment of God’s promises, inaugurating a new era of salvation in the life of humanity. The article also emphasizes that the word “today” in Luke’s text has a deep soteriological meaning, building a kind of bridge between eschatological time and everyday life, inviting readers to reflect on the presence of Jesus in their lives precisely „today”.
