Pope Innocent XI belongs to the great figures of the Church of the early modern period. He contributed greatly to the renewal of the Church and its relations with countries during his pontificate. He defended the freedom of the Church and at the same time he was reported by his contemporaries to be characterized by true holiness. Unfortunately, mainly because of the political pressures, his beatification had had to be postponed until 1956, when he was beatified by Pope Pius XII. Polish bishops of the interwar period played a significant role in this event. In the beatification address, certain qualities and achievements of Innocent XI were mentioned, including his role in the context of the Battle of Vienna (1683), drawing the attention to his historical and spiritual greatness. The speech of Pius XII highlights the relevance of the message of church activity of Innocent XI, especially his concern for freedom of the Church and for Christian dimension of Europe.
