The Book of Jeremiah in the light of textual and genre studies — the process of creation

This article presents the process of the creation of the Book of Jeremiah in the context of textual, historical and literary research. It contains an analysis of the origins and editing of the book. It shows that its seemingly chaotic structure is the result of a multi-stage process of creation, involving both the prophet Jeremiah and his disciple Baruch. The text has been preserved in two basic traditions: the Hebrew Masoretic Text (MT) and the Greek Septuagint (LXX), which differ in length, layout and content. The discoveries at Qumran confirmed the existence of different textual versions, as well as the essential importance of the Masoretic tradition as fundamental to the biblical canon. The article also discusses the genre and linguistic diversity of the book, presenting it as an anthology of prophetic speeches, lamentations, biographical narratives, and liturgical and cultic forms. It shows that the Book of Jeremiah, despite numerous redactions and textual differences, retains its canonical and theological character and is a valuable source for research on Old Testament prophetic literature.
