Polish toy exhibition in Kraków (1913): Between craft and art

Polish folk toymaking has a long tradition, but until almost the end of the 19th century it developed primarily as a cottage industry among peasants (Koszarawa, Leżajsk, Myślenice, Jaworów). Wealthy social classes benefited from foreign production, where toy production reached a high level. In Galicia, the quality of toymaking improved positively as a result of the development of vocational education and artistic crafts in the last quarter of the 19th century. A leading role was played by Liga Pomocy Przemysłowej (the Industrial Aid League; est. 1904 in Lviv), whose activities focused on supporting and promoting various branches of Galician industry. In 1911, the League established a Home Industry Seminar, where teaching toymaking became a modern concept. This formed the basis for three exhibitions of Polish toymaking, one of which was held in Kraków in 1913. The toys on display from various toy centers, captivated visitors and led them on an engaging journey around the world. The artists’ dedication to the original arrangements and the masterfully crafted pieces demonstrated that a toy can be not only a craft but also a work of art.
