The “Ordo Missae” from 1965 as the First Step Towards Greater Involvement of Lay Lectors, Cantors and Altar Boys

This article discusses the issue of lay ministry in light of an important document from the first phase of liturgical renewal after the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965), namely the rites of the Holy Mass. Published in 1965, contained not only a simplification or abolition of many rubrics from its counterpart in the 1962 Roman Missal, but also many new formulations concerning the ministry of altar servers. This is not surprising, considering that the conciliar Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium, drew attention to certain liturgical functions performed by the laity. Therefore, the aim of this article is to show the modifications made to the rubrics at that time, which led to the greater involvement of altar servers. This will be done by analysing individual rubrics in the light of historical and legal considerations. The first chapter of the thesis will emphasise the importance of functions related to reading the Word of God. The second chapter will deal with the issue of singing. The third chapter will focus on the issue of lay people touching liturgical vessels, which was closely related to serving at the altar. This will make it possible to see not only the modifications to the liturgy, but also the theology that accompanied them.
